Who Would Benefit From the OpiAlert Kit?
The OpiAlert kit aids in the mitigation of opioid exposure to workers in the following occupations:
- Law Enforcement Officers
- Emergency Medical Technicians
- Crime Lab Analysts
- Hospital Staff
- Corrections Officers
- Postal Office Staff
- Public Health Officials
Why Conduct Opioid Testing Using OpiAlert?
According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, 2-3 milligrams of fentanyl is enough to cause respiratory depression, arrest and possible death – a measurement equivalent to 5-7 grains of table salt. This poses a significant health risk to the first responders, including law enforcement, emergency medical technicians, and crime lab analysts who could be potentially exposed to opioids while on the job. Therefore, the identification and accurate measurement of the opioid compounds on the surface is an important step in mitigating this risk. The OpiAlert kit allows for the accurate identification and quantification of 21 compounds (including 20 opioIds) on a surface following suspected opioid contamination to determine the effectiveness of the decontamination procedures of an area.
Why Choose OpiAlert?
The OpiAlert kit is a validated surface sampling solution designed to make it easy to collect samples on multiple surfaces. The kit contains everything you need to collect up to 10 samples and return them to our industry-leading laboratory for analysis, shipping included.
Using the OpiAlert kit’s step-by-step instructions, you can accurately evaluate opioid surface contamination by having samples analyzed at our AIHA-LAP, LLC/ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
Using the unique OpiAlert analytical method, you can test for up to 21 compounds on a single sample (including 20 opioid compounds):
Want to test for compounds that are not on the list? No problem. We have analytical methods available to test for 1000+ compounds individually, although some restrictions may apply. Please refer to our Pharmaceutical Fee Schedule in the Resources section below for more information.
The OpiAlert analytical technique features a reporting limit of 1 nanogram/sample, and the turn-around time for sample results is typically 10-15 business days, with rush service considered upon request prior to sample submission.
Benefits of OpiAlert
- Quantification 21 Compounds with a Single Swab
- Sensitivity of 1 nanogram/swab
- Use of ultra-sensitive and selective technology
- Assessment of decontamination procedures on multiple surfaces
Overview of Opioid Surface Sampling
Surface sampling for opioids is a crucial tool to effectively manage the risk of exposure to opioid compounds by patients and workers following suspected opioid contamination of an area. When done right, surface sampling and the subsequent sample analysis, will show where (if any) opioid surface contamination exists. This is then an indication of the effectiveness of current decontamination measures that are in place.
The OpiAlert analytical technique features high-pressure liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS).
LC/MS/MS is currently the most sensitive and most selective analytical technique available in the world, with the main benefits being as follows:
- Virtually eliminates the risk of getting false positives results
- Differentiates between and gives results for each of the 21 compounds, with an LOQ of 1 nanogram per sample
- Most robust and conservative approach to managing the risks of occupational exposure to opioid surface contamination
