Collecting IH Samples
Industrial hygiene (IH) is the science of protecting and enhancing the health and safety of people at work and in their communities. An IH laboratory analyzes samples to help evaluate potential chemical exposures.
Air samples can be collected to evaluate inhalation exposure and surface/wipe samples collected to assess the potential for absorption. Bulks can be analyzed to determine if exposure sampling should be performed. Examples are lead in paint chips or asbestos in building materials, but note that a result from bulk testing cannot be correlated to an airborne exposure.
Chemistry defines all aspects of sampling and analysis, starting with the choice of appropriate sampling media, collection procedures, proper sample handling to maintain integrity after sampling, and laboratory analytical techniques for analysis. Sampling and analytical methods are developed and published by public agencies, such as OSHA and NIOSH.
Partnering With Maxxam
We have more than 50 years of experience in providing IH analytical services. The industries we serve are in the public and private sectors. Private industry sectors include petrochemical, manufacturing, mining, academia, construction materials, and insurance, so we have experience in every kind of exposure situation.
We have accreditation from the AIHA Laboratory Accreditation Program (AIHA-LAP, LLC) in two programs:
- Industrial hygiene (IHLAP) – all fields of testing except compressed air
- Environmental lead (ELLAP) – all fields of testing
Two of the three HSE laboratories have been accredited in the IH programs since 1974 and the third laboratory since 1999. Our complete scope for each laboratory facility can be found under the Accreditations information or by going to the AIHA-LAP web site, at www.aihaaccreditedlabs.org.
Our HSE laboratory staff includes:
- Three Certified Industrial Hygienists (CIH)
- Three Ph.Ds
- One Professional Geologist (P.G.)
- Staff members with more than 40 years of experience in industrial hygiene
The staff has experience in routine analyses and research-oriented projects, including method development, and this expertise supports the broad range of tests offered.
We are a full-service laboratory, offering analysis for more than 2,000 chemicals. You can check our online sampling guide and note that we are continuously adding new capabilities, so contact us if you cannot find a test that you need. The common tests we provide include:
- Crystalline silica
- Elemental carbon
- Hexavalent chromium
- Organic solvents
- Particulates, total, respirable, and inhalable
- Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
- Sulfur compounds, including mercaptans
You can use the sampling guide or contact our client services representatives to obtain guidance on the appropriate sampling media, flow rates, air volumes, and compatibilities for multiple chemicals on one sample.
